Internship Program
Students who intern with Waco AHEC receive firsthand experiences with health education, community engagement, program development, and social advocacy.
Our interns are actively involved in planning programs and events, developing educational resources, engaging with students and community members, and building relationships with community partners.
Internships are designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience while allowing students to contribute to real public health programs serving our region.

What Our Interns Do
Internship projects vary depending on the semester, current programming, and organizational needs. Previous interns have assisted with:
Organizing our annual Healthy Families Expo
Presenting health education topics to students
Creating curriculum for health education and summer programs
Program planning and evaluation
Planning events and panel discussions focused on health equity
Supporting after-school health education programs
Curriculum and educational resource development
Social media management and communications
Community-based health education
Community outreach and engagement
Supporting health career pathway and youth programming
Collaborating with community organizations and healthcare partners
Intern Eligibility
We host interns during the spring, summer, and fall semesters.
Internships are unpaid, but students may be able to receive academic credit through their college or university. We can provide focused supervision for Bachelor of Public Health and Master of Public Health students completing internship or practicum requirements.
Students seeking a practicum or capstone experience for academic credit are also welcome to inquire about opportunities. Availability depends on current projects, academic requirements, program needs, and staff capacity.
Students from other areas of study are also welcome to apply; however, we cannot guarantee specialized supervision related to degree programs outside of public health.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program and have an interest in public health, community engagement, and working with underserved communities.
Application & Selection Process
Waco AHEC typically accepts 1–4 interns per semester, depending on current program needs, available projects, and staff capacity.
Applications are not reviewed until after the application deadline. Because we receive a large number of applications, not every applicant will be invited to interview. Following our initial review, we typically invite approximately 10 candidates to interview before making final selections.
Applicants can expect to hear from us within two weeks following the application deadline regarding the status of their application and whether they have been selected to move forward in the interview process.
Submitting an application does not guarantee an interview or internship placement.
Applications submitted before the deadline will be held for review until the application period closes unless an early review is required for academic credit.
